If you enjoyed the Super Mario Bros Movie then you're in luck because according to a known film leaker, we're getting several new Nintendo adaptations from Illumination Studios and Nintendo.
According to known film leaker Daniel Richtman on Patreon, Illumination Studios and Nintendo are currently working on the following movies:
- The Super Mario Bros Movie 2
- Luigi's Mansion
- Donkey Kong
- The Legend Of Zelda
Richtman is known in film circles for reliably leaking details from both Marvel movies and DC movies and has a pretty great track record. Of course, this is all worth taking with a grain of salt, especially since none of these movies, not even the sequel to Mario, have been confirmed by the studios themselves.
Chris Pratt has recently spoken about how the WGA strike has affected the future of the Mario franchise, and said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:
"I really do support the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed, and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it'll be time to start talking about what's next for that"
What this very clearly implies is that we are absolutely getting at least a sequel to the Super Mario Bros movie, but that any news will have to wait. We also know that Nintendo would love to make more movies based on their properties thanks to a 2021 Financial Results Q&A, so having multiple movies in production would go a long way towards meeting this goal.
Of course, none of this will really come as a massive shock to anybody who has been paying attention to the box office of the Super Mario Bros movie. The film adaptation has grossed over $1.3 billion at the global box office since it was released back in April, making it the biggest film of 2023 by a rather wide margin. Only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 even comes close to it, with a current overall box office of $806 million.
