Players worldwide and across consoles and PC are gearing up for the final Open Beta weekend ahead of the full release of Street Fighter 6. As they'll have access to various modes, characters, and features specifically for the weekend, one feature that will be available at launch is cross-platform support.
Cross-platform support has often been associated with crossplay; however, with the game coming to Xbox consoles, many have discussed if cross-platform will have support enabled for Street Fighter 6. We've detailed the complete breakdown of whether Capcom will bring cross-platform support for Street Fighter 6.
Will Street Fighter 6 Have Cross-Platform Support?
Cross-platform play allows players to play a gaming release across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. So, it shouldn't be surprising that Street Fighter 6 will include cross-platform support; however, there is no confirmation if cross-generation support will be enabled between PlayStation 4 and 5 consoles.
It also remains to be seen ahead of the Open Beta weekend if any console-exclusive features will be available ahead of its global release in June 2023. Nevertheless, players will have access to all game features, modes, and characters across consoles and PC until we receive new updates and developments from Capcom.
What makes cross-platform support more worthwhile for Street Fighter 6 is, contrary to its previous release, this will be the first Street Fighter game since Street Fighter 4 that will be coming to Xbox consoles. However, as noted, Street Fighter 6 will not be available for Xbox One consoles, nor will cross-gen support be available across the Xbox ecosystem until further notice.
In contrast, Street Fighter 6 is confirmed to have crossplay enabled, especially for the Fighting Ground mode, as players across all available platforms can engage in online battles, which was confirmed last June by notable FGC content creator Maximilian Dood. Similarly, GameSpot's Managing Editor Tamoor Hussain confirmed that the game would also utilize rollback netcode for which Capcom is building this feature from the ground up, given how terrible this was in Street Fighter 5.
This detail was revealed during an interview for IGN with producer Shuhei Matsumoto and game director Takayuki Nakayama who the latter explained the reasoning behind the decision to build the rollback netcode:
As you know, Street Fighter 5 also had rollback netcode, but in terms of [Street Fighter] 6, [it] will have rollback netcode, but it's not going to be the same as what we had in [Street Fighter] 5. This is something that they're building from scratch again. There's a lot of effort being put into the development of the netcode, and it's not something that only the netcode engineers are involved in.
Nakayama continued that the engineering and battle teams were heavily involved in building the game's rollback netcode. This was done to ensure that it enhances the gameplay experience for players and that it plays well and without major technical issues.
It's unclear whether cross-save will be enabled for Street Fighter 6 despite Capcom already having some infrastructure available to support this feature, as you can link your Capcom ID to multiple accounts, including PSN and Steam. Capcom has yet to confirm if Street Fighter 6 will fully support cross-save, which should let players access their game save files on any platform with a copy of the game linked to an account.
