How To Get Genger For Free In Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Gengar is a beloved Gen1 pocket monster you can get for free in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Here's how to get it.

Gengar has been a fan-favorite Pokémon ever since Generation I. But, unfortunately, this spooky Ghost-type Pokémon can only be acquired by trading a Haunter. So if you want to obtain a Gengar via this method, you'll either have to find a friend willing to trade you a Haunter, or you'll have to go without.

This has been the case for many trade Pokémon over the years (including Machamp and Scizor) and is frustrating for those without the ability to trade in real life. Thankfully, this problem is somewhat alleviated in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as you can grab Gengar for free!

This method of acquiring Genger comes courtesy of Cian Maher on Twitter. Accordingly, an NPC in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will trade you a Pincurchin for a Haunter, allowing you to obtain Gengar via this in-game trade!

Here's how you can grab this Gengar step-by-step:

  • Go to an area near a beach and catch a Pincurchin. The following places allow you to find Pincurchin in the wild:
    • South Province (Area One / Area Five)
    • East Province (Area One / Area Two)
    • West Province (Area One / Area Two)
    • East Paladean Sea
  • Travel to Levincia City.
  • Search near the bridge for an NPC named Blossom, wearing a blue shirt and red shorts.
  • Agree to trade your Pincurchin for her Haunter.
  • After you receive the Haunter, it will evolve into Gengar!

This is great for anyone looking to complete their Pokédex but is also a subtle nod to Pokémon gaming veterans.

Those who played through Diamond and Pearl may remember an NPC named Mindy, who could be found in Snowpoint City. Mindy also offered to trade the player a Haunter, but, unfortunately, this Haunter came holding an Everstone!

This item prevents a Pokémon from evolving so the traded Haunter would not become a Gengar. Mindy then teases the player as her prank is a success. Naturally, Pokémon fans were livid, spawning a subreddit known as r/F*ckMindy. Thankfully, the developers didn't make the same mistake this time around.
