Pokémon's most unique critter is making its long-awaited debut in Pokémon GO, bringing its evolution family and unique catching mechanics to the game. Scatterbug and its evolutions, Spewpa, and the stunning Vivillon (Vi-vi-yon) are available for Trainers to acquire, which poses a daunting challenge if you wish to have one.
Acquiring them will be challenging as you'll need to obtain Postcards from habitats corresponding to specific Vivillon patterns; Niantic has added a new medal to make it worthwhile for Trainers. With that being said, here's how to get any Vivillon pattern in Pokémon GO.
How To Get A Vivillon Pattern In Pokémon GO?
According to a developer blog post from Niantic, Trainers can encounter its first form, Scatterbug, by collecting and pinning Postcards received when traveling to other regions. Once caught, they can evolve from Scatterbug to Spewpa and, eventually, Vivillon, which comes with a unique pattern.
These patterns reflect the Scatterbug's region of origin and the climate of its habitat, for which 20 different patterns are available in-game. Once you've evolved Scatterbug to Vivillon, you may receive patterns from the following regions/habitats:
- Archipelago
- Continental
- Elegant
- Garden
- High Plains
- Icy Snow
- Jungle
- Marine
- Meadow
- Modern
- Monsoon
- Ocean
- Polar
- River
- Sandstorm
- Savanna
- Sun
- Tundra
This excludes the Pokéball and Fancy Form Vivillon Pattern, which the latter was included in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as it's not available in Pokémon GO. You can use the Vivillon Map or Vivillon Collector medal to view where you've acquired your Scatterbug bug from and which pattern you'll receive after evolving to Vivillon.
You can also receive a Scatterbug by opening Gifts from friends who reside in these regions before pinning the Postcard within the Postcard Book from your Item Bag. You can pin a maximum of three Postcards daily for which you can accumulate progress on encounter Scatterbug.
Trainers can earn medals for their progress with their Vivillon pattern collection, aptly named the Vivillon Collector medal. This can be unlocked by pinning their first Postcard within the Postcard Book with additional sub-medals associated with the various Vivillon patterns.
These sub-medals work because you must have collected three Postcards from the habitat or region associated with a specific Vivillon pattern. After completing progress for the sub-medal, you'll earn bonus encounters with Scatterbug related to the particular Vivillon pattern.
Additionally, you'll need a required number of Postcards to increase the sub-medal rank, increasing each rank. Courtesy of a notable Pokémon source, Leek Duck, these are the current Postcard requirements to encounter a wild Scatterbug in Pokémon GO:
- Pin three Postcards to encounter Scatterbug for the first time
- Pin nine Postcards for the second Scatterbug encounter
- Pin 15 Postcards for the third Scatterbug encounter and every subsequent encounter
This process is complicated to understand and makes collecting Postcards from various habitats much more difficult if they don't have friends residing in these regions. While acquiring a Vivillon won't be easy, its mechanics certainly adds a unique rarity for the Pokémon and presents an interesting challenge to those who truly want to "catch 'em all."
