There are various types of Ghosts in the horror game Phasmophobia, from Demons to Mares to Onryos. Each Ghost will Hunt you once your team's sanity reaches a certain threshold. The Hunt sanity threshold differs for each Ghost, meaning that, depending on your sanity level, you'll find yourself face-to-face with different types of Ghosts.
In this article, we will explain how Hunt Sanity thresholds work, as well as the average Hunt sanity threshold for each Ghost type. This way, you can better prepare for your next ghost-hunting adventure, whether you venture out alone or with friends.
April 17 2023 - We've checked for any changes to the ghosts' sanity thresholds in Phasmophobia.
How Do Ghost Hunts And Sanity Thresholds Work In Phasmophobia?
At the beginning of any Phasmophobia game, your sanity level starts at 100%. It decreases throughout the match, affecting the types of Ghosts you and your team encounter. Each Ghost has a set sanity threshold; once your team's sanity level reaches the Ghost type's threshold, that Ghost has a chance of beginning a Hunt.
For example, Demons can begin to hunt you at about a 70% sanity threshold, while Deogens won't bother you and your team until your sanity reaches 40%.
Note that the types of Ghosts your team will encounter are based on your team's collective sanity level, not your individual sanity level. This only differs for the Banshee, who targets one player and only considers their sanity level, not the rest of the team's.
Phasmophobia Ghost Hunt Sanity Thresholds
Various abilities can affect Ghosts' Hunt sanity thresholds; for example, some Ghosts such as the Demon have a low chance of being able to Hunt at any sanity level. That said, each type of Ghost has a basic Hunt sanity threshold that is the same across all matches.
For most Ghosts, the default Hunt sanity threshold is 50%.
For all Ghosts' Hunt sanity thresholds, take a look at the following chart:
Ghost | Condition | Hunt sanity threshold (%) |

Phasmophobia Ghost Hunt Sanity Threshold Abilities
As mentioned, some Ghosts have abilities that affect when they Hunt. These abilities are pretty important to note since they can catch you by surprise if you aren't careful.
- The Banshee only checks the sanity of one target, rather than the sanity of the whole team as other Ghosts do.
- The Shade cannot begin a hunt when in a room with any living player.
- The Demon has a low chance of beginning a Hunt regardless of a team's collective sanity level.
- The Onryo cannot begin a Hunt when it is near a fire source, as it will only make the flame go out. If the flame is extinguished though, there's also a chance of triggering an Onryo Hunt, so a lit flame doesn't guarantee protection from this Ghost.
- The Shade cannot begin a Hunt when in a room with any living player.
- The Mimic can mimic the Hunt thresholds of the ghost it is currently mimicking. For example, if The Mimic mimics the Deogen, its Hunt threshold will become 40%.
That's all you need to know about the Ghost Hunt sanity thresholds in Phasmophobia, including exactly how they work and at which sanity levels you are likely to see each Ghost type.
