The shift from loot boxes to a battle-pass-focused monetization system in Overwatch 2 was a major point of contention when it first happened. However, much to the delight of fans, loot boxes are making a comeback. Let's take a closer look at their reintroduction, how they’ll work, the drop rates, and other important details now that they’ve returned to Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2 Loot Box Details and How They Work

In Overwatch 2, loot boxes won't be available for direct purchase like in other games. Instead, players can obtain them through weekly rewards, events, Twitch Drops, and seasonal Battle Passes. There are two types of loot boxes: regular and Legendary, with Legendary boxes offering a higher chance to drop specific items (more on that later).

Game Director Aaron Keller also announced a new Discord program, which will soon offer loot boxes as rewards, with up to 100 loot boxes or more up for grabs. For players who own the Battle Pass, they’ll have access to up to three Legendary loot boxes, compared to one for those on the free track. As we’ll discuss below, the Legendary boxes are a must-have for some fantastic rewards.

Loot boxes will contain various types of items with different rarities (except for weapon variants obtained in Competitive mode). The available items include:

  • Skins
  • Highlight Intros
  • Emotes
  • Victory Poses
  • Weapon Charms
  • Souvenirs
  • Voice Lines
  • Sprays

Loot Box Drop Rates in Overwatch 2

As mentioned, there are two types of loot boxes: normal and Legendary. Each type has varying drop rates for different items. The drop rates for a normal loot box remain fixed, while Legendary loot boxes guarantee higher-tier rewards. Let’s break down the numbers:

Loot box drop rates and details

Normal Loot Box Drop Rates:

  • Legendary: 5.10%
  • Epic: 21.93%
  • Rare: 96.26%
  • Common: 97.97%

Legendary Loot Box Drop Rates:

  • Legendary: 100% (guaranteed)
  • Epic: 21.93%
  • Rare: 96.26%
  • Common: 97.97%

As you can see, Legendary loot boxes are the best, guaranteeing a Legendary-tier item or cosmetic every time. This is fantastic for cosmetic hunters, as it helps you gauge how much grinding is needed to get the skins or cosmetics you want. For casual players, there’s a great chance to get lucky and land a Legendary item that you might have had to pay for in previous seasons.

Now that loot boxes are fully explained, you’re ready to dive into Season 15 and enjoy all the exciting new content, including the new hero Freja, a fresh battle pass, loot boxes, and so much more on the horizon for Overwatch 2.
