It's been more than three years since Mortal Kombat 11 was released, and fans have been yearning for the next entry in this gruesome long-running fighting game series.
While a no-show at The Game Awards 2022 may have been disappointing, news on the studio's next title may not be far, at least according to a data miner.
NeatherRealm studio's next game reveal may be on the horizon
According to a notable Mortal Kombat content creator, thethiny, NetherRealm Studios may be looking to promote their next unannounced title via in-game ads in Mortal Kombat 11.
As absurd as it sounds, this wouldn't be the first time the Chicago-based studio would pull off such a marketing tactic. Mortal Kombat 11 trailer and DLC were similarly teased within Mortal Kombat 10 a few years ago.
While the teaser for Mortal Kombat 12 or any other NetherRealm title has not yet appeared in Mortal Kombat 11, thethiny claims that the game files now contain placeholders for an upcoming game.
Earlier this year, during an AMA session on Twitter, the game's creative director Ed Boon also confirmed that the studio's next game is either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3. But then again, we know Boon likes to troll fans a bit, so we wouldn't be surprised if it was something different entirely.
In other news, rumors about an early 2023 Xbox Games Showcase has been swirling all over the internet. Given that Mortal Kombat 11 is now available on the game pass, could the studio's next title be revealed at this rumored Xbox Showcase and released directly on Game Pass? Watch this space.
