Rumors have been flying about Final Fantasy 9 getting the remake treatment, and they're getting harder to ignore.

There's been a lot of talk about Final Fantasy 9 being the test title in the series to be given a remake, following the success of Final Fantasy 7: Remake and Rebirth. But for the most part it's been just that — a lot of talk. Square Enix have to confirm or hint towards the beloved title getting a makeover.

That said, a new leak has emerged that seems to point to the remake's existence. EpicDB, a website which tracks what goes on behind the scenes of the Epic Games Store, has fuelled a lot of speculations since its launch. As reported by PushSquare, a reference to something called 'Momo' was found in the list of software, which is supposedly a codename for the Final Fantasy 9 remake.

The reason it's been identified as such is due to the listing being registered to Square Enix, along side additional DLC listings such as "Thief's Knives" pre-order DLC, which is likely tied to FF9 protagonist Zidane, and the "Tetra Master Starter Pack" DLC. Fans will recognize this as being the cardgame in FF9 called Tetra Master.

As for when we might see an eventual release for the Final Fantasy 9 remake, it's anyone's guess at this point. The listings in EpicDB date back to 2023, so it's unclear whether they hold any accuracy. At the time of writing, however, Square Enix have yet to make an official announcement.
