In a recent interview, legendary producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida made claims regarding plans at publisher Square Enix to make their titles more accessible to players across multiple platforms. According to Yoshi-P, they hope to see “more and more” Square Enix games on multiple platforms, and he hopes to see Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox consoles in the future.
Final Fantasy players will recall earlier this year when Yoshi-P commented that he would like to see the action RPG game on Xbox consoles, which eventually arrived on PC in September 2024. As it stands, Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's sales did not meet their expectations following their respective launches, according to their financials call in May 2024, which suggests that "cannibalization" amongst their games is believed to be the reason behind its failures.
Yoshi-P made these claims in an interview with 4Gamertranscribed by VGC, in which he stated, “Of course, we want you to play it a lot on other platforms as well. This time, we will also release the Xbox Series X|S version at the same time."
“In the future, Square Enix titles will be released simultaneously on each platform more and more, but since this is close to the first release, we would like Xbox users to play it as well.” Naturally, Yoshi-P's comments seemingly corroborate earlier comments he made with another publication, SI Video Games, in which he alluded to Final Fantasy 16 being multi-platform after announcing, at the time, its PC port.
As to its potential Xbox release, they are "looking towards the Xbox version" as they do "want to release it" on the platform; however, "when it comes to the specifics such as when the game would be available and such, we are not in a position to be able to share anything." Nevertheless, he doesn't want to give up hope on a potential Xbox release as they hope "to achieve that, so players should not give up in terms of their hopes.”
