Dead Space is a popular survival-horror video game series by Visceral Games that has captured the hearts of gamers for over a decade. However, as the countdown for Dead Space Remake's release date continues to tick down, rumors have begun swirling about a potential film adaptation of the franchise, which would bring the terrifying world of Dead Space to the big screen.
These rumors came after U.S. filmmaker John Carpenter, best known for making horror movies like Halloween (1978) and The Thing (1982), shared his interest in directing a film adaptation of the video game Dead Space in October last year. In an interview with A.V. Club, Carpenter said that the only game he would be interested in turning into a movie would be Dead Space. "That would make a real great movie. I could do that," Carpenter said.
However, in a more recent interview with Variety, John Carpenter elaborated on rumors of a potential Dead Space movie, shooting down speculation and shattering fans' high hopes in the process. When asked if there was any movement on his earlier comments about "directing a 'Dead Space' movie," Carpenter had this to say:
No, no, no. I can’t believe how that spread. I’m a big video game fan, so I played all the games. I was down looking at the new digital cameras, the RED, and happened to mention to them that I would love to do a 'Dead Space' film.
The master of horror continued by adding he was "not gonna do it," mentioning that until someone asks him to be involved, he "wouldn't do it." It's worth noting that Carpenter didn't completely shut down the idea of a potential Dead Space movie, noting that "they already have another director involved," hinting that a Dead Space film is possibly in the works.
That just went around, and everybody said, 'Oh, when are you gonna do it?' I’m not gonna do it. I think they already have another director involved. And they haven’t asked me to do it. So until someone asks me, I wouldn’t do it. But there’s a new version of the 'Dead Space' video game coming out in January, and I’m there.
The Dead Space Remake is a reimagining of the original game, which was released in 2008. The game is set in a distant future where humanity has colonized space, and players take on the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer who finds himself stranded on a mining ship overrun by monstrous creatures known as Necromorphs.
With an arsenal of futuristic weapons and a suit that enhances his abilities, Isaac must fight to survive and uncover the truth behind the Necromorph outbreak. The game promises to be a thrilling and terrifying remodeled survival-horror experience that will keep players on the edge of their seats.
Dead Space Remake will release on 27 January 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC.
