For years, Dead by Daylight fans have been attempting to solve cryptic developer messages left in the game's anniversary event loading screens that seem to hint toward a secret code. As of October 2023, Dead by Daylight streamer Paulie Esther claims to have finally solved the hidden message behind the anniversary message puzzle, and it involves the Teacher's unused game files. Similar to the Smasher, the Teacher was never added to the game as a killer, but fans have found the files related to their existence.
During one of the game's anniversary events, Lead UI Designer Sarah wrote in her loading screen blurb: "I wonder if anyone will ever figure out why I put all those unused icons in the game files... I guess I'll have to spell it out." Another even clearer message from Sarah Robinson, Associate Art Director, mentioned that there is "some kind of order to solve the puzzle."
It turns out that, to solve the riddle, fans will literally have to "spell it out." As Paulie Esther discovered in his video, there are six unused files for The Teacher, including the supposed scrapped killer themselves, a weapon, and several add-ons. They include:
- Gum
- Inhaler
- Trapple
- Graduation Cap
- Underperform
- Detention
Put in order, the first letters of each item spell out "GIT GUD." Yep, that's the answer to those secret developer messages that Dead By Daylight's team has been leaving for years and was likely the only reason that the "Teacher" concept ever existed in the game's files in the first place.
Unfortunately, the "GITGUD" code doesn't actually work in-game (and we've tried various iterations). Perhaps this isn't the final answer to the puzzle after all, and there's more to unveil - or maybe it was all just a little joke from developers that fans have finally uncovered. For now, this seems like a pretty satisfying answer to the riddle unless players manage to find an even deeper meaning to the files or message.
