Disney Dreamlight Valley: A Rift in Time is the first major expansion to release since the game arrived, and it introduces three new characters including Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. Finding him isn't too tricky, but several quests have to be completed if you want to make Gaston your friend (or a reluctant village acquaintance).
Starting with the steps to unlock access to the Glittering Dunes, this Disney Dreamlight Valley guide will go over everything you need to do to get Gaston in the new A Rift in Time DLC. We've got details on how to finish The Wanderer of The Dunes, The Wild Tangle's Swarm, and finally Diamond in the Rough to unlock Gaston and get the Jewel of Time.
Where is Gaston in Disney Dreamlight Valley?
There are three new characters to unlock in Disney Dreamlight Valley: A Rift in Time, and Gaston is likely to be the third you get to. In order to reach him in the Glittering Dunes, you'll first have to finish all of the following quests:
- The Port of Many Worlds
- The Secrets of Eternity Isle
- The Flying Metal Nuisance
- The Sands in the Hourglass
After you've wrapped up each of these and used Mist to repair the Broken Bridge, you'll be able to enter the Wild Tangle and the Glittering Dunes. Head far to the west and you should spot Gaston's bright-red shirt as he's hanging out by a tree at the waterfall of sand.
If you're also hoping to get EVE in Disney Dreamlight Valley, we recommend starting her DIRECTIVE: DANGER quest first as several locations you need to photograph show up during the quests to get Gaston.
Green Spiky-Leafed Plant, Flexing Spider-Like Thing & Sweet Brown Raisin Things
Once you've spoken to Gaston in the Glittering Dunes, he'll ask you to find a few things that he isn't the best at describing. The first is the "Green Spiky-Leafed Plant," and you'll need three of these. Fortunately, they're all over The Plains and can be harvested easily to get Agave for him. You can also get those Sweet Brown Raisin Things or Dates from the trees in The Plains.
Lastly, the Flexing Spider-Like Thing is actually a Scorpion. Use your trusty fishing rod and cast it into the waterfall of sand next to where you initially found Gaston. You can normally find a Scorpion in the orange ripples. Take the items to Gaston and this will move you forward to the next stage of The Wanderer in The Dunes.
How to Finish The Wanderer in The Dunes
After a little more conversation, if that word is even appropriate for what Gaston normally says, you'll need to follow him to his encampment. If you cross in front of the waterfall of sand, you'll see a tunnel. Rather than going up to The Oasis, turn right and follow the rest of the tunnel down to meet with Gaston.
He'll ask you to search for clues around the camp, and you'll be looking for some paints, coconuts, and some homemade glue in the chest at this encampment. The paints will be on some boxes to the left if you're facing the tent, and the coconuts are hidden by the cooking grill and busted barrels.
The clues will lead you to meet Gaston at his Shipwreck, but to do so you'll have to spend 4,000 Mist and unlock The Wastes. Once you arrive, Gaston will instruct you to search the quicksand for a possible vault key. Fish in the quicksand directly behind him, not the waterfall, and you will find... LeFou? Yes, it's LeFou in classic Cast Away fashion.
After speaking to Gaston about this, you'll instead have to now search The Plains for the Desert Scarab Piece. Use your Hourglass to keep searching for treasure until you have it, and then head to a Hologram Station and speak to Jafar at the pedastal. Go check on Gaston one final time, and this will complete The Wanderer in The Dunes.
How to Find the Swarming Insects in The Grove
Once you finish The Wanderer in The Dunes, you'll automatically get the next quest which is The Wild Tangle's Swarm. However, you will have to wait at least a few hours of real-world time before you can go check on Gaston again and move things forward. Once you do, he'll tell you to go speak to Rapunzel.
While you may be able to speak to her in the Wild Tangle even if you haven't unlocked Rapunzel, you probably want to focus on her quests first. You'll have to gain access to The Grove (at the cost of 4,000 Mist) while you unlock Rapunzel in Disney Dreamlight Valley, so doing her quests first is the most efficient path.
After speaking to her, Rapunzel will mention a strange buzzing sound which will send you on the hunt for the Swarming Insects in The Grove. They're in the upper-right corner if you check the map, and you need to take a photo of the area shown above and then go show it to Rapunzel who will come up with the idea of using a Carnivorous Floral Arrangement to get rid of the bugs.
You need the following to craft two Carnivorous Floral Arrangements:
- 4 Green Fly Trap
- 4 Purple Fly Trap
- 4 Red Pitcher Plant
- 4 Yellow Pitcher Plant
- 12 Tropical Wood
If you're having issues with the Tropical Wood, make sure to check your mailbox as the devs have delivered some to early players to address occasional bugs with how it spawns near trees in the Wild Tangle. You can find the plants in The Grasslands and The Grove.
Head back to where you took the photo and use decoration mode to place each Carnivorous Floral Arrangement near the Swarming Insects. Go speak to Gaston, and by the time you get back the insects will be gone and you can collect the Jungle Scarab Piece.
Finally, head to one of the pedastals around Eternity Isle to speak to Jafar and move things forward. You'll need three Dream Shards as well as 1,000 Mist to repair the Rusty Jungle Scarab Piece at a Timebending Table. Speak to Jafar one more time, and The Wild Tangle's Swarm will be completed.
How to Start Diamond in the Rough
You're now onto the third and final quest to get Gaston in Disney Dreamlight Valley. After speaking to him again, follow the Scarab's trail up to The Wastes where it will reveal a Cave of Wonders just like players may remember from Aladdin. Break the news to Gaston that he's no Diamond in the Rough, and you can head in to find the Jewel of Time.
Of course, once inside you'll be greeted by several gates blocking your path. Jafar can offer a few hints, and you'll learn that reflected light in the mirrors is the key to progressing further into the Cave of Wonders.
How to Open the Gate and Activate the Light Interrupter
The first gate in the Cave of Wonders will be a bit simpler, as you just head around to pick up the other Light Interrupter and place it before using the lever by the second mirror to get things into place. The gate will open, but getting each Light Interrupter for the next stage will be a bit more challenging. First, head to the right at the next gate to get the first Light Interrupter.
There are several circular paths on the floor which you'll need to interact with and turn to allow the path to reach the Light Interrupter in the center of the room. Three of them only have one possible orientation, so just move them until things light up. The other two have a few options, so you'll need to follow the lines on the floor and change their positions accordingly.
Pick up the first Light Interrupter and head to the other pathway to the left of this gate. You should find a Mirror on the ground, and you'll need to pull several levers to complete a mini-puzzle and acquire the second Light Interrupter. Head back to the gate and install both of them the same way you did earlier, pull the final lever, and the gate will open.
Collect the Jewel of Time & Unlock Gaston
The hard work is finally done. Once the gate is opened, pass into this final part of the Cave of Wonders. Worry not, there's no trap in this situation, as you just need to collect the Jewel of Time from the statue.
Exit the Cave of Wonders and speak to Gaston one final time, and this will unlock him as a friend and villager in Disney Dreamlight Valley. His house isn't far, and you can now speak to him to upgrade your friendship level and make Gaston useful for once in his life.
