As Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) esports fans, we thoroughly enjoyed ESL's latest event, IEM Rio 2024, which delivered exciting matches and some upsets from 7 to 13 October 2024. In case you couldn't watch the action live, you might want to learn what went down at the Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Don't worry; we've got you covered! Let's dive into what happened at the IEM Rio 2024 group and playoff stages and then finish off proceedings with the event's final standings.

IEM Rio 2024 Group Stage Results

In their home country, FURIA Esports did not disappoint in Group A, taking down FaZe Clan in the opening BO1 match with a 13-7 win on Dust2, then beating MOUZ 2-1 in their first BO3. To qualify as the top seed from Group A and secure an instant spot in the semifinals, FURIA Esports then went on to beat favorites NAVI 2-0.

MOUZ recovered from their loss against the Brazillians to beat Complexity 2-0 and then reverse-sweep FaZe Clan to secure a third spot in Group A. This means FURIA Esports, NAVI, and MOUZ made it through to the playoffs.

In Group B, HEROIC impressed and shocked fans, going on an absolute tear. They first beat G2 Esports 13-10 in the opening BO1 match, then went on to clean-sweep Astralis and then Team Vitality to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Virtus.pro secured the final playoffs spot from Group B, beating Astralis and then TheMongolz 2-0. Yes, this means that G2 Esports and Astralis were eliminated early, while HEROIC, Vitality, and Virtus.pro made it through in that order.

IEM Rio 2024 Playoffs: NAVI vs. MOUZ Grand Finale

In the IEM Rio 2024 single-elimination bracket playoffs, NAVI made quick work of Virtus.pro with a solid 2-0 and then had to reverse-sweep a revitalized HEROIC with a narrow 2-1 victory, where the second map went into overtime. 

On the other side of the bracket, MOUZ proved why experts still consider them one of the best squads in the world, beating with a 2-1 reverse sweep, and then silencing the home crowd by absolutely destroying FURIA Esports with a 2-0 where both maps ended 13-3.

In the IEM Rio 2024 grand final, NAVI didn't take their foot off the pedal, beating MOUZ 13-11 on MOUZ's map pick of Inferno. Check out Ukranian AWPer Ihor "w0nderful" Zhdanov's fantastic four kills in the early rounds of Inferno, none of which are actually with the Big Green.

NAVI then beat MOUZ in a dominating fashion on Dust2 with a 13-2 scoreline. MOUZ pulled one back on Mirage, which is considered one of NAVI's best maps. MOUZ won Mirage convincingly with a 13-6 score, giving fans hope of an upset. 

The comeback hopes increased even further when MOUZ managed to go up 10-2 on the fourth map, Ancient.

However, when teams switched sides, NAVI went on a rampage, winning 11 rounds on the CT side to close out the map 13-11 and win the IEM Rio 2024 grand finale with a 3-1 scoreline.

  • 1st place - NAVI wins $100,000
  • 2nd place - MOUZ wins $42,000
  • 3rd & 4th place - HEROIC and FURIA Esports win $20,000 each.
  • 5th & 6th place - Team Vitality and Virtus.pro win $10,000 each.
  • 7th & 8th place - FaZe Clan and TheMongolz win $6,000 each.
  • 9th to 12th place - Astralis, Eternal Fire, Team Liquid, and Complexity win $5,000 each.
  • 13th to 16th place - Imperial Esports, paiN Gaming, G2 Esports and 9z Team win $4,000 each.

Congratulations go to NAVI who walks away with the lion's share of the prize pool at $100,000, and another big trophy for their cabinet. NAVI's Romanian Entry Fragger, Mihai "iM" Ivan, picked up his first S-Tier MVP title for his magnificent performance; well done!
