Gale is your core spellcaster in Baldur's Gate 3, and he isn't just a sad-looking man with a desire to blow himself up. He can also be a glass cannon, and supremely powerful if you level him up correctly, but do it badly and you'll just have a glass cannon. We've got the details on what school you should take, what equipment you should use, and what feats you should take for Gale.

Best Gale Build
Best Subclass
Unlike with other classes, you don't really pick a subclass for Wizards. You instead pick a school of magic from the following options, and each one gives you different spells:
- Abjuration
- Conjuration
- Divination
- Enchantment
- Evocation
- Necromancy
- Illusion
- Transmutation
The best option for Gale is Evocation, as it allows him to really crank up the damage with massive area-of-effect spells and gives you access to Sculpt Spells, which causes any creatures who are allied with you to automatically succeed in their saving throws, which means friendly fire isn't something you have to worry about.
Best Feats
- Moderately Armoured - Look, Gale's great. He really is. But he's really easily hit by basically anything your opponent throws at him, so you NEED to give him armour as early as you can. This will increase either his Strength or Dexterity by 1 while also giving him proficiency with Medium Armour and Shields.
- Resilient: Intelligence - Take it from us, Intelligence is great for a Wizard. After all, why wouldn't you want to be as smart as you can? This will also increase your damage, in addition to giving you Proficiency in Intelligence Saving Throws.
- Tough - For the love of god, take Tough. It'll boost Gale's HP and let him take a couple more hits. If you're not careful, he'll go down like a lead balloon, so take it.
Best Spells
These are the spells you should have by the time you're level twelve:
- Magic Missile
- Thunderwave
- Flaming Sphere
- Fireball
- Counterspell
- Haste
- Banishment
- Disintegrate
- Conjure Elemental
Fill the other spell slots with whatever you need in a given circumstance, but you should always have these on hand in case you end up in a situation where you just need to turn somebody to ash.
Best Equipment
It's pretty difficult to equip Gale with a good loadout early on in the game, so just use whatever you come across that works well with a spellcaster's proficiencies. Once you hit Act 3 of the game, though, you should use these loadouts:
- Cloak of the Weave
- Robe of the Weave
- Quickspell Gloves
- Spellcrux Amulet
- Markoheshkir
It's admittedly much more about what spells you've chosen to prepare than armour or weaponry for Gale, but having everything prepares you for a situation where you might be caught unaware, so just take our advice.
