While there's been no shortage of modders already creating their own chaotic changes for Baldur's Gate 3, developer Larian Studios has finally announced Official Modding Support is on the way. The arrival of Patch 7 later this year is already expected to bring some big upgrades, but the testing process on official mods is now underway. We've got more here on how you can take part in the closed beta and how the new mod system will work.
Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7 Brings Official Mod Support
The release of Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 7 is already something many are excited to see this September, but a big stage of preparation for that drop is now underway. Larian Studios announced today that official modding support is coming with it, and the closed alpha period has already begun.
The developer has already reached out to mod authors to get them involved in the Closed Alpha, which will largely focus on proven modders using the new Baldur's Gate 3 Toolkit to recreate their existing mods. This July, they'll open registration for a closed beta "capped at roughly 1,000 players" which anyone on PC will be able to sign up for as mods created during the alpha are tested.
Once everything has gone through testing, official modding support will be available via the already well known mod.io platform. While the toolkit itself will remain PC exclusive, mods created with it and approved will be available for console players to download and enjoy.
There will be some restrictions, as they've already clarified "some NSFW mods and certain script-heavy modifications" won't be available this way. However, modding outside of this new system will still be supported and encouraged. It'll just require a few extra steps and remain PC exclusive.
