With the release of Aberration in ARK: Survival Ascended, a host of new and returning features, structures, and creatures have been introduced. Among these, the Rock Drake is a unique creature exclusive to Aberration. Although capturing one can be challenging, it's worth the effort for any survivor of Ascended's Aberration.

If you're eager to acquire a Rock Drake but unsure where to start, we've got you covered. Below, we'll guide you on how to find and tame Rock Drakes in Aberration and highlight the abilities that make this creature a valuable addition to your roster.

How To Tame A Rock Drake In ARK Survival Ascended Aberration

In ARK Survival Ascended, Rock Drakes are creatures that cannot be tamed using conventional methods. The only way to acquire one is by stealing their eggs and hatching them. This process is reminiscent of obtaining Wyvern eggs in Scorched Earth, and, similar to Wyverns, obtaining Rock Drake eggs is a hazardous endeavor.

To make this process easier, start by locating the Rock Drake eggs, which can be found in The Grave of the Lost, situated beneath Element Falls behind a twin waterfall. This area is marked by its distinctive yellow lighting. You’ll find various indentations along the walls, some of which house Rock Drake nests with eggs.

Securing the eggs themselves is risky as it involves entering a radiated zone. To prepare, equip yourself with hazard suits, as they deteriorate with radiation exposure. It’s also advisable to bring a strong tame, such as a Megalosaurus, to get as close to the eggs as possible. From there, you’ll need to proceed on foot to retrieve the eggs and then quickly return to your tame.

Rock Drake Egg stealing tips
You can use Cosmo and the Glider to solo getting these Rock Drake eggs, but using a good tame and a Hazard suit can also work well and be slightly less dangerous. (Picture: Shane / Studio Wildcard)

If you have the Bobs Tall Tales DLC, Cosmo can be extremely helpful. You can use Cosmo to swing into the area, grab the eggs, and then swing back out. Combining Cosmo with the Glider Suit skin allows you to fly in solo, build height, and glide out.

Alternatively, you can use the Glider Suit alone to enter The Grave of the Lost and make your escape, though this method is the most perilous. Using a tame to get close to the eggs is generally the safest approach.

Rock Drake Abilities In Aberration

Once you’ve successfully acquired one or more Rock Drake eggs, you can hatch them by placing them in your home within the correct temperature range. The Rock Drake Egg requires 6 hours, 14 minutes, and 58.201 seconds to hatch. It must be kept between -90 to -80 °C / -130 to -112 °F to avoid health loss.

After hatching, the Rock Drake needs to be fed and kept safe as it grows. Once matured, it will acquire a range of useful abilities. Let’s explore the abilities and uses of the Rock Drake in Aberration.

All-Terrain Transport

  • The Rock Drake excels as a highly mobile mount, capable of climbing, gliding, and swimming. It can navigate all surfaces and hide with camouflage, making it effective in various environments, though it struggles in jungle and swamp areas with limited cliffs and heavy tree cover.

Cavern Traversal

  • The Rock Drake's climbing and gliding skills make it ideal for quickly crossing Aberration’s dangerous terrain, significantly reducing travel time between regions compared to other tames.

Surface Explorer

  • Unique among mounts, the Rock Drake can access surface areas and cave systems without ramps. Its gliding and camouflage abilities enable it to safely farm loot crates at night and return underground quickly.

Aquatic Transit

  • In water, the Rock Drake performs well, rivaling a Spino in speed and maneuverability. It can jump from water to glide, evading threats, though it must avoid Cnidaria and Electrophorus to prevent stuns.

Cargo Hauler

  • The Rock Drake is great for transporting cargo and passengers across cave systems but cannot carry other tames. It can be used with Cryopods for moving tames and is best suited for hauling resources or passengers, with a focus on weight and stamina.

Egg Thief

  • Rock Drakes are adept at stealing eggs from various nests due to their stealth and travel abilities, allowing them to evade and combat threats effectively.

Stealth Tactician

  • The Drake’s camouflage ability, which makes it and its rider nearly invisible, is useful for sneaking past enemies and ambushing opponents. It’s effective for artifact hunting and PvP scouting, although it can still be spotted by turrets and players with low graphics settings.

Reaper-Seeker

  • The Rock Drake’s feathers react to nearby Reapers, making it a good choice for locating and combating Reaper Kings and Queens and collecting valuable Reaper resources.

Nameless Hunter

  • While other tames can kill Nameless quickly, the Rock Drake excels at transporting Nameless Venom back to base. This venom is valuable for feeding and healing Drakes, making it a critical resource.

Taming Aid

  • The Rock Drake, with its high health and mobility, can assist in taming by tanking hits and chasing targets, though it’s less effective than a Karkinos for grabbing and holding creatures.

Escape Vehicle

  • With its climbing, gliding, and camouflage abilities, the Rock Drake is a reliable escape vehicle, capable of evading dangerous situations that are too risky for players and other tames.

And there you have it - a thorough guide on taming your Rock Drake in ARK Survival Ascended Aberration, along with an overview of how valuable this tame can be for your adventures through this fractured ARK. As always, exercise caution when collecting eggs and have a backup plan, as obtaining Rock Drake eggs is one of the most perilous tasks you can undertake. However, the rewards are worth the effort.
