The Hyperfighting Federation champion Forge was officially revealed to be the first hero of Apex Legends season four last week, who was a brawler specialising in close quarters combat.
He was expected to be released on 4th February, although a new trailer titled Stories From The Outlands delivers a slight surprise by brutally killing off the character.
The perpetrator of James “The Forge” McCormick’s demise is a character some players might be familiar with. The Revenant was the subject of various leaks and rumours ahead of Forge’s announcement, and has previously appeared in the background for last year’s Halloween event and an official blog post.
With all the evidence, the Revenant was expected to kick off season four as the first new hero, which made Forge’s reveal somewhat of a surprise.
So is this an elaborate decoy? Quite possibly. The character’s page on the official website has since been greyed out, with “your champion has fallen” written under the trailer.
A statement under Twitter account Outlands Television also confirms Forge’s death, although there’s no word on the potential replacement.

Respawn producer Drew McCoy recently tweeted about his disdain of leaks too, indicating Forge may have been introduced to maintain an element of surprise.
“Leaks are the absolute worst,” Drew wrote. “I’ve never worked on a single project where it was purposeful or wanted.
“We spend insane amounts of time and energy to create cool surprises. Really sucks when someone wants internet points bad enough to ruin that.”
Since it keeps popping up:

While Forge is dead (unless another surprise is in order), we’ll have to wait and see whether Respawn is set to officially introduce Revenant into the fray.
Season 4 starts on the Apex Legends servers on 4th February.
