The Day of the Devs held its digital-only The Game Awards Edition showcase, featuring multiple independent gaming releases celebrating "the creativity, diversity, and magic of video games." This year's event saw numerous game announcements coming to consoles and PCs in 2025 and beyond, as well as updates on previously revealed games, including Sleight of Hand, Hyper Light Breaker, and inKonbini.
One of the premiere announcements made at the Day of the Devs: The Game Awards Edition is from developer Veewo Games. The Chinese developer announced the sequel to their action roguelite platform game Neon Abyss alongside an official trailer and new gameplay details, which launches in 2025.
First released in 2020, Neon Abyss received mixed to positive reviews as it was praised for its platforming elements, exhilarating enemy encounters, and ample content but was criticized for its gameplay mechanics and lack of environment variety. The developer took much of the feedback and criticisms and improved many gameplay features and mechanics for the upcoming sequel, Neon Abyss 2, which is confirmed to launch through Steam Early Access in 2025.
"Neon Abyss 2 will build upon and enhance the classic mechanics that made the original so popular. The weapon upgrade system, the item-based construction system, and the beloved pet-raising features will all undergo revolutionary changes in the second installment," the official Neon Abyss 2 announcement post read.
The "adrenaline-pumping" sequel will introduce new gameplay mechanics like the Faith and Destiny systems, offering "a more exhilarating and strategic gameplay experience with an increased level of challenge." Players can also look forward to Unlimited Item Synergies, which "the item-based construction system" has undergone significant changes, as players can merge and load up power-ups before letting them loose for some chaotic and explosive effects when in combat.
The game's weaponry and pet-hatching features also saw some changes for the sequel, including new companions being added as players can "hatch and train" before they evolve to join players on this action-packed journey "against the Abyss." Neon Abyss 2 is available for Wishlisting from its Steam page and is now available as the developer looks to confirm its Early Access release in the coming weeks.
