Fans of XDefiant have been struck with some hard news, following a statement from Executive Producer Mark Rubin on the future of the free-to-play FPS. As of December 3, 2024, Ubisoft has confirmed that it will be ending support for XDefiant, halting new downloads, player registrations and purchases.
"Free-to-play, in particular, is a long journey. Many free-to-play games take a long time to find their footing and become profitable," Rubin's statement read. "It's a long journey that Ubisoft and the teams working on the game were prepared to make until very recently. But unfortunately, the journey became too much to sensibly continue."
The announcement naturally threw up some questions for those who had previously purchased the game's Ultimate Founders Pack, though Ubisoft has confirmed that they will be refunded in full. Any players who made purchases in XDefiant within the last 30 days will also be fully refunded.
Despite halting all new downloads, the game's servers will remain active and be fully playable for existing owners up until June 3, 2025. The upcoming Season 3 launch will also still roll out.
As reported by VGC, alsmost half of the team working on XDefiant are expected to be transitioning to other roles within Ubisoft. However, production studios in San Francisco and Osaka will close, with the company's Sydney office downsizing.
