Nintendo Switch owners with a Switch Online membership, especially in Western countries and territories, can finally play three iconic Game Boy Advance games this July. Previously available in Japan only, three Densetsu no Starfy titles are now available for the online subscription service, according to a recent announcement.
However, players must have the Switch Online + Expansion subscription tier to play Game Boy games and utilize various exclusive features. The Densetsu no Starfy re-releases mark the first Japan-only Game Boy title to be added to the service, but it's not the first time an exclusive game has hit the Western markets following The Mystery of Atlantis, an NES game that was added recently this month.
According to the Game Boy Advance July 2024 Update video, "Dive into a trio of colorful action games starring Starfy, the legendary star-shaped hero, in Densetsu no Starfy, Densetsu no Starfy 2, and Densetsu no Starfy 3. Previously only available in Japan, these titles are joining the Game Boy™ Advance – Nintendo Switch Online library and are available for all Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members to play starting today!"
The first three Densetsu no Starfy games, part of The Legendary Starfy series, were announced on Nintendo of America's Twitter account that they will be added to the Switch Online + Expansion membership. Developed by Japanese studio Tose, they were never released to Western audiences, citing a decision made by Nintendo of America to be "too Japanese" for its audience, according to an IGN interview with game producer Hitoshi Yamagami.
Accompanying its announcement post on Twitter, an official trailer revealed some details regarding Densetsu no Starfy's addition to the Switch Online service. Densetsu no Starfy, Densetsu no Starfy 2 and 3 are now available for Switch Online + Expansion members as of 12th July 2024 as they retain their Japanese localizations across all games.
