When the Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) Remake was first announced in 2021 at a Sony State of Play event, I couldn't contain my excitement. Three years later, the hype has dropped a bit, but now, we've learned that the game is still alive and well, with some unexpected twists and turns along the way.
When it was announced in 2021, the game was already in development for three years by the Aspyr studio, then development was apparently paused and then started back up under Saber Interactive. With Saber Interactive's departure from Embracer Group and then CEO Matthew Karch's acquisition of the project, alongside several studios and other developments, things got a bit confusing.
Is the KotOR Remake Alive?
Speaking to IGN in April 2024, Matthew Karch has set fans' minds at rest, confirming that KotOR Remake is still alive and well:
It's clear and it's obivous that we're working on this. It's been in the press numerous times. What I will say is that the game is alive and well, and we're dedicated to making sure we exceed consumer expectations.
Following the great news from the Saber Interactive CEO, another bit of information, thanks to a credible source, has started making the rounds.
What About Sony & KotOR Remake?
At the State of Play announcement, as you can see from the image above, the game was touted as a PS5 release, and many fans expected this to be an exclusive. Well, we are not saying it won't be released on the PS5 or anything like that, but according to industry insider Jeff Grubb, Sony wants nothing to do with the project.
The initial teaser trailer, which was shown during Sony's State of Play in 2021, has since also been delisted. Jeff Grubb went on to give us hope, as the insider has trust in Saber Interactive.
Please note: Take the rumor about Sony and the KotOR Remake with a grain of salt until such time as either Saber Interactive or Sony provides an official comment.
KotOR Remake might still be a VERY long way away, stuck in a galaxy far, far away, if you will. Even so, we are happy to report that at least we now have confirmation the game is alive and well!
