Netflix's fantasy series The Witcher posted on social media channels that its fourth season has begun production in the United Kingdom. This was detailed in the latest update post from Netflix, which provided information that the series will conclude after five seasons.

The show's conclusion was announced on 18th April 2024, which came as quite a surprise following the recent casting changes first announced in 2022. Exclusive images from the fourth season's tableread were recently released and featured most of the cast, including Australian actor Liam Hemsworth, who is stepping into the boots of Geralt of Rivia for the remaining seasons.

The fantasy series, adapted from a series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, will film the fourth and fifth seasons "back-to-back" to "complete" Sapkowski's works. Netflix confirmed that these books will be adapted to the remaining three novels: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.

Series showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich expressed her excitement about the upcoming seasons, stating, "It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. We're thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski's books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn't be our show if we didn't push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends."

Hemsworth confirmed his casting news as the titular character in October 2022 following a statement from Henry Cavill, who had stepped down after three seasons. According to Hemsworth, who praised the British actor's performance, he stated that he's "honored that he's handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf's blades for the next chapter of his adventure."

Likewise, Cavill wrote in an Instagram post, "As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him — enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find." The fourth season will add Laurence Fishburne to its ranks as Regis, a character who has appeared in the novels and video game adaptations as a "world-wise Barber-surgeon with a mysterious past."
