Surgent Studios, the development studio behind the afro-futuristic Metroidvania-style adventure game Tales of Kenzera: Zau, is officially working on their next game. This was announced in a social media post by the game's creative director and Surgent Studios founder, actor, and producer, Abubakar Salim, who reposted it to his personal Twitter account confirming this exciting news.
The game in question isn't a sequel to Tales of Kenzera: Zau but a brand new IP, a horror game, which is scheduled to release sometime in 2025, with more details to be announced in the coming months. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the studio has partnered with Pocketpair Publishing as its publisher, and we look forward to this next gaming adventure for Surgent Studios.
Pocketpair Publishing announced on their Twitter account on 23rd January 2025 that the publisher will work with Surgent Studios to publish their forthcoming game. "We're pleased to announce that our first project as Pocketpair Publishing will be supporting a brand new horror game from Surgent Studios," which the publisher expressed their excitement in working with the developer "with an original approach, and Pocketpair is excited to support them to the fullest extent," the announcement post read on Twitter
In response to this announcement in an official statement, Salim said, “We noticed a pattern in the entertainment industry, and Pocketpair has given us the opportunity to make a horror game about it," in which he added that "both Surgent and Pocketpair are well-versed in taking risks." He continued by saying that the forthcoming game "will be short and weird, and we think players will be interested in what we have to say."
This next game in development at Surgent Studios is confirmed to be a horror game, but for fans of Tales of Kenzera: Zau, this isn't the end for now. Salim added that the studio is "still in earnest conversation about further projects set in the Tales of Kenzera universe, but this will be a standalone piece: a mile marker between where we’ve come from and where we’re going.“
