It seems Smash fans are excited about the return of offline events, as just a month after Summit 11 broke the record for the biggest prize pool in the community's history, Ultimate Summit 3 is set to surpass it, having already accumulated over $150k during the initial crowdfunding phase.
The Summit invitationals, which are events organised by Beyond The Summit for both Melee and Ultimate, allow fans to fund the prize pool by directly contributing or buying merchandise in their official store, exchanging the amount they spend for a set number of votes which they can use to endorse players looking to opt-in for a spot.
Even after the voting phase is over, fans can still donate to the prize pool, with Summit 11, won by Joseph "Mang0" Marquez in spectacular fashion, amassed a total of $155,669 when it
As of the time of writing, the Ultimate Summit 3 prize pool sits at $153,675, meaning it's not a matter of if but rather when will it surpass Summit 11's number.
It's worth mentioning that the upcoming Ultimate Summit 3 will be the first of three Smash events sponsored by crypto platform Coinbase. It'll remain to be seen how will that affect the prize pool, if at all.
