Tyranitar is a pseudo-legendary in Pokémon GO that has always been a fan favorite in the franchise because of the daunting look it has. On top of one of the best designs in Generation II, Tyranitar has an interesting dual-typing of Dark and Rock.
This dual-typing makes Tyranitar a threat to many Pokémon within the game, but it is especially susceptible to a few types. Before you can claim Tyranitar as your own, you'll either need to catch enough Larvitars or defeat the Armor Pokemon directly in a raid. This guide will outline how to get the Armor Pokémon, the best moveset, and the best counters.
Best counters toTyranitar in Pokémon GO
There are a few scenarios where you might run into Tyranitar in Pokémon GO. Raids are the most common, and having the right team will mean the most for retaining a win, but that's not it. There are also Team GO Rocket grunts that have a Shadow Tyranitar, and players will also use the Armor Pokémon in battles.

When choosing any lineup against Tyranitar, you will want to focus on nearly all Fighting-type Pokémon. Other types such as Grass, Water, and Ground are also decent options, but Fighting-types will nearly double the damage. Some of the best options are listed below.
- Conkeldurr - Counter (Fast) and Dynamic Punch (Charged)
- Machamp - Counter (Fast) and Dynamic Punch or Cross Chop (Charged)
- Breloom - Counter (Fast) and Dynamic Punch (Charged)
- Sirfetch'd - Counter (Fast) and Close Combat (Charged)
- Kyogre - Waterfall (Fast) and Surf (Charged)
- Zarude - Vine Whip (Fast) and Energy Ball (Charged)
The last two options on the list are there as alternatives to fighting types, and they can serve as a baseline for other Water or Grass-types. However, you should stick to Fighting-type Pokémon to destroy Tyranitar with ease.
Tyranitar Best Moveset in Pokémon GO
How effective Tyranitar is on your team is going to depend entirely on the moves that you can get. One of the best moves on the Armor Pokémon is an Elite TM for fast moves, so you will either need to get the Pokémon during an event, or use an Elite TM item.
That doesn't mean that Tyranitar is useless without it, but it will change the rankings in raids and especially in GO Battle League matches within the Master League.
For the Fast Attack, you'll certainly want Smack Down, which is the Elite TM attack. It has Rock-typing and it dishes out plenty of damage while building Charge Attack energy. Bite is a good alternative if you don't have access to Smack Down.
When choosing the Charged attacks, Crunch and Stone Edge are the best. Crunch provides a quick shield burn attack with Dark-typing. Stone Edge is the true nuke and goes perfect with Smack Down as a move.
