Pokémon GO has a massive Pokédex at this point and there are plenty of great Grass-type Pokémon that you can choose from to craft a powerful team. But out of all the new additions over the years in the mobile game, there are a few that are considered the best Grass-type Pokémon when compared to the rest.
In general, you can base the best Pokémon in a type class on the effective damage or defense that it has in raids. Sometimes, that effectiveness will transfer over to the GO Battle League as well, but not always. The best of the best are versatile and can excel in various elements of Pokémon GO.
The best Grass-Type in Pokémon GO
Arguments can be made for a few different picks, but Venusaur is the best Grass-type in the game, and it's not hard to justify why. There are no other Grass-types that offer the best in class for nearly everything at a high level. Venusaur along could be considered in the top 5, but there are a few versions of the Kanto starter that are fantastic in the game.
Mega Venusaur is essentially the most powerful Grass-type for raids. It hits incredibly hard against good matchups and moves like Frenzy Plant are a hard carry. Just below the Mega for, there is also a Shadow form that does a ton of damage and can easily outpace other picks in raids.

Getting a Mega can take some time, but getting Venusaur itself doesn't. Evolving an Ivysaur is easy compared to getting picks like Zarude and Roserade, both of which easily round out the top 3 picks. Venusaur is an easy entry point for Trainer which deserves some recognition.
On top of easy access and raid potential, Venusaur is a fantastic pick for the Ultra League in the Pokémon GO Battle League. The Kanto starter can also do well in the Great League with the right team. Roserade falls flat in PvP, and Zarude only does well in the Master League. Ice-types taking over in some leagues have caused Grass-types in general to fall a bit though.
Zarude would be the next natural option after Venusaur for the best pick. It doesn't need a Mega form and it does a ton of damage in raids. However, it can be much harder to get one and it requires XL candy in the Master League to perform at all. Because you can't catch Zarudes, you will need hundreds of Rare Candies.
There are no other Grass-type Pokémon that have the ability to bring raid effectiveness, accessibility, and PvP potential together like Venusaur does. The classic Pokémon is an easy pick for the best Grass-type in the game.
