Blizzard announced the existence of Overwatch 2 last year, which will feature a new single-player mode and a graphical overhaul.
It was believed the sequel was a while off from release, although a since deleted tweet from PlayStation Brasil’s official Twitter account may confirmed it’s on course for 2020.
In a screenshot of the tweet captured by Voxel, the post claimed “2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 comes to PS4” while linking to a PlayStation blog interview with Overwatch’s assistant director from November 2019.
But how reliable is all this? It’s certainly not out of the realms of possibility Overwatch 2 could release in 2020, possibly to coincide with the launch of the next-gen consoles later this year.
Speaking about a release date at Blizzcon 2019, game director Jeff Kaplan was incredibly vague on when it would come out, stating: “I don’t know. I have no idea.
“Like, just let us make it great, that’s what we care about more than anything. We don’t have a date in mind.”
Unless development on Overwatch 2 is going very well, it’s possible this tweet may have simply been a mistake by the Sony marketing team.
The release of Overwatch 2 this year might give the competitive scene the jolt it needs however, with concerns hanging over the Overwatch League following the departure of many key casters.
The Overwatch League’s third season begins on 8 February.
