Injustice 3 could still happen, according to a new IGN interview with Ed Boon. In the interview, Boon outlines several reasons why there's been such a massive gap between Injustice 2 and a potential Injustice 3 and clarifies that he still wants to make a third game in the series.
"There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn't. But we did go to a new graphics engine, Unreal. We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe. So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realized 'Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games'"
Injustice 2 was released in 2017, four years after the original. Since then, Boon has been consistently teasing the possibility of a third Injustice title, but nothing has come to fruition. The possibility of a new Injustice game in the next few years was dashed by the announcement of Mortal Kombat 1, which means it could be as late as 2026 before we even catch a glimpse of a potential Injustice 3. Still, with the massive amount of new characters that have became popular in DC since the release of Injustice 2, we could see a fascinating roster.
