There are many mysteries and secrets at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but none has intrigued would-be witches and wizards more than the fabled Giant Squid that resides deep within the Black Lake. More specifically, in Hogwarts Legacy, there is a secret cave entrance underneath the Castle that is accessible only by swimming into it, in which players can uncover a mosaic of this mythical creature.
While the Giant Squid mosaic is undoubtedly a hint to one of Hogwarts' greatest mysteries mentioned numerous times in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, several (subtle) references to the creature in the game have fueled speculation of a possible secret mission. And indeed, this speculation is true. Here's everything we know about the Giant Squid in Hogwarts Legacy.
What Is The Giant Squid In The Harry Potter Universe?
If you haven't read any Harry Potter books, you might have never heard of the Giant Squid since it never actually appeared in any of the films. However, based on the novels, this creature is described as a somewhat docile mystical beast that isn't necessarily dangerous, represented as red in color. It's also quite fond of students' food, having eaten Harry's toast after he tossed it in the lake in Chapter 18 of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
How To Enter The Giant Squid Cave In Hogwarts Legacy
The Giant Squid cave is a secret area hidden underneath Hogwarts Castle, accessible only by swimming. In this cave, a squid-themed pedestal can be found next to a mosaic, indicating a potential entrance to a secret area. As it turns out, placing toast (you'll get this by completing Scrope's Last Hope -- available only to Slytherins) onto the pedestal unlocks the Jackdaw's Rest quest, the 15th main storyline quest in Hogwarts Legacy. We won't go into more detail here as we'll have a detailed walkthrough guide on how to complete it later.
As you might have guessed, the interaction required to enter the Giant Squid cave in Hogwarts Legacy is similar to opening the Chamber of Secrets in the second-floor girls' lavatory by speaking Parseltongue to the snake engraved on the bathroom's taps. It's worth noting that the Giant Squid's physical existence in Hogwarts Legacy cannot be explored by swimming underwater. Still, its existence is confirmed through several appearances in the game (you'll have to keep your eyes peeled at the Black Lake to catch it!).
For example, in the Slytherin common room, players can interact with the glass and potentially annoy the Giant Squid, capturing a glimpse of it whooshing by. Overall, the reference to the giant squid in Hogwarts Legacy is a nod to the Harry Potter series and adds to the excitement of what other secrets players will uncover in the game. That said, you can learn more about this interesting area in the video below.
