The long-awaited Ghost of Tsushima 2 was finally revealed during Sony's PlayStation State of Play on September 24, 2024. Titled Ghost of Yōtei, this sequel brings players to the northernmost of Japan's main islands and introduces us to a brand new protagonist, Atsu.
While a new hero might be something for fans to adjust to, there's a good reason why Jin Sakai won't be making a return in Ghost of Yōtei — its setting.
Does Ghost of Yōtei Take Place After Ghost of Tsushima?
According to Sony's PlayStation Blog, Ghost of Yōtei takes place over 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, in 1603. It's safe to say there's no way Jin could be making a comeback this time around.
Aside from being a different time period, Ghost of Yōtei will bring fans to a new area of Japan. It's set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei in the middle of Ezo, an area known as Hokkaido in present day. Developer Sucker Punch describes it as "a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell."
During the reveal trailer, we saw a glimpse of the game's combat and environments that seek to bring a new atmosphere to the upcoming title. It promises starts and auroras in the night sky, wind movement in grass and vegetation, and new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and new weaponry. Ghost of Yōtei is Sucker Punch's first title developed for the PlayStation 5.
The game is set to launch in 2025, with more information set to be revealed in the coming months. If you've yet to see Ghost of Yōtei for yourself, be sure to check out the trailer below:
