Sucker Punch Productions will have a productive 2025 as they gear up for the upcoming release of the action-adventure game Ghost of Yōtei, a standalone sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima. In addition to this game's release, a film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima is in development by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, with John Wick director Chad Stahelski at the helm of the project; however, no details on the film's development have been released to the public and media since its announcement.
Sony made yet another announcement regarding the Ghost of Tsushima IP, which aims to expand and explore the game's rich narrative, and world-building through a different medium in a stunning new project. This was announced at a global tech convention in the United States; however, no further details have been provided since its official announcement.
Crunchyroll's president Rahul Purini and Aniplex president Atsuhiro Iwakami announced at the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 convention in Las Vegas, USA, that an anime treatment based on the Ghost of Tsushima IP is in development. The Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation, adapted from the game's Legends multiplayer mode released in 2021, will be developed in conjunction with Aniplex and studio Kamikaze Douga.
According to the announcement, director Takanobu Mizuno, who previously worked on Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, Mega Man X8, Mega Man X Command Mission, and the Star Wars: Visions episode "The Duel," is set to helm the project. Qizilbash stated during the CES 2025 presentation, “Having already proven the immense quality and versatility of our gaming properties across multiple successful film and television projects, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our first-ever anime adaptation," according to the Head of PlayStation Productions, Asad Qizilbash.
“Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series,” Qizilbash later added. Lastly, it's reported and confirmed that the Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation will "exclusively premiere" on the anime streaming platform Crunchyroll sometime in 2027; however, neither PlayStation Productions nor Sucker Punch Productions could confirm an exact date as of writing.
Purini stated that the Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation will be "a testament to the creative synergy within the Sony family, uniting the expertise of PlayStation Studios and PlayStation Productions; the creative team of Sucker Punch Productions and Aniplex; Sony Music’s iconic global artist roster; and Crunchyroll’s fan-first global marketing and distribution footprint.” Furthermore, he ended his statement adding that the Ghost of Tsushima anime adaptation will undoubtedly offer fans of the game and anime "an exciting new way to experience the game" as he promises audiences that it "will be bold and groundbreaking” once it premieres in 2027.
