Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has finally transitioned to a free-to-play format, launching on Xbox and Nintendo Switch as a result. This decision was made in collaboration with Epic Games, which acquired developers Mediatonic in 2021.
Boasting features such as cross-progression and cross-platform play, Fall Guys is more accessible than ever before, a much-needed set of options for a game that relies on having a consistent player base. What's more, the brand-new season pass will make sure to keep players engaged for weeks to come.
For Nintendo Switch users specifically, a question arose when Fall Guys made its way to their platform on 21st June: do you need to purchase a Nintendo Online subscription to play the game?
Do you need Nintendo Online for Fall Guys?
The Nintendo Online service has plenty of features to entice players into getting the subscription service. The basic plan alone offers access to exclusive games like Pac-Man and Tetris 99, a catalog of retro titles taken from the vast NES and SNES libraries, and most importantly, the ability to play certain games online such as Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Minecraft.
The Expansion Pack subscription adds DLC and Nintendo 64 plus Sega Genesis games to the vast offering of perks. However, those interested in playing Fall Guys online should know the following: you don't need any Nintendo subscription to play the game online.
Similar to other Epic Games juggernaut, Fortnite, users on Nintendo Switch don't have to have an active online subscription service to play Fall Guys, making it a truly free-to-play experience.
In fact, this has been the recurrent theme with other titles and consoles. For example, Xbox One users don't require Gold to play games like Fortnite, Fall Guys, and other free-to-play titles like Destiny 2. The same applies to PlayStation users and PSN.
So there you have it! Now you know you don't have to worry about purchasing a Nintendo Online subscription if you want to try out Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.
Once again, remember that this does not apply to Nintendo titles, which require an active subscription for their online offerings. The rule of thumb is, that if the game is from a third-party developer and is free-to-play, you most likely don't need the Nintendo Online subscription.
