Dead by Daylight players enraged at new prestige reward

Dead by Daylight fans will receive a new reward for reaching Prestige 3 on characters before the Prestige Rework, but many are disappointed with the prize.
Dead by Daylight players enraged at new prestige reward

Dead by Daylight seems to be in a state of heavy change, with some of the game's biggest shifts in meta and gameplay ever coming this month. While many players are excited about most of the upcoming changes - which will reduce the grind and, developers say, make gameplay better on both the killer and survivor side - some things aren't so great for existing players.

Many survivors and killers alike are disappointed and frustrated with the reward for those who reached Prestige 3 before the Dead by Daylight prestige rework. Read on to learn what the reward is, and why players are so upset.

In the June 2022 developer update, Dead by Daylight's developers announced a rework to the Prestige system. With the new system, players will no longer lose items, offerings, and perks when they prestige. These changes, according to developers, will reduce the grind by 75%.

Many players have Prestiged their characters before the rework, though, and thus lost significant amounts of Bloodpoints, offerings, perks, and items in the process.

As a result, Behaviour Interactive announced that players who reached Prestige 3 before the rework would receive a "distinct reward". They left players wondering what it was, keeping it a surprise until the Public Test Build.

Community rages about Dead by Daylight prestige reward

Dead by Daylight PTB 6.1.0 went live on 29th June, and most long-time players were excited to check out the hyped Prestige 3 reward in action. What they found, though, was underwhelming: the reward is a filter for characters' lobby portraits. Players can toggle the animated particle effect on portraits on or off.

In other words, the only person who can see the reward is the player. Many players were hoping for something to show off to other fans; many people speculated that the reward would be a unique post-game Prestige icon.

Thousands of players took to Twitter, Reddit, and other platforms to complain about the lackluster reward.

One user even pointed out that the particle effect used for the portraits wasn't designed specifically for Prestige 3 portraits; it is the same particle effect used on the 'Sale' button and past anniversary event crowns.

"It's really disheartening as someone who has everyone at P3-50 + almost half the roster maxed," user Lady_Lavery wrote on Reddit. "I'd rather have no reward at all than copy pasted sparkles."

"This is so disappointing. I wish they would have told us what it was earlier," DilvishW added on Reddit. "There's just no point to this when you can just have custom character select icons anyway. And literally, nobody else sees this unless you are a streamer."

This isn't the first time Dead by Daylight has reworked its Prestige system. After the first rework, Behaviour introduced Legacy cosmetics for users who had already Prestiged their characters. These glowing items are still coveted by players today.

While Behaviour has said they aren't bringing back Legacy cosmetics, most players were hoping for something more than a lobby particle effect to show off for their hours of hard work.

Some players have suggested additional Bloodpoints, Iridescent Shards, or even Auric Cells as an additional or alternative reward.

With so much community outrage, it's possible that Behaviour may consider changing the reward before the update goes live. For now, though, players who reached Prestige 3 before the upcoming update can look forward to these custom portraits.
