In this overview, we'll guide you through the latest information on Black Myth: Wu Kong, covering the recently disclosed release date, intriguing story details, gameplay mechanics, trailers, and more.
Black Myth: Wu Kong Release Date
In the trailer that was showcased at The Game Awards, it was revealed that Black Myth: Wukong is set to release on August 20, 2024. After three (now confirmed to be four) years of waiting, the release date has finally been locked in, and players can expect to grab the game in mid-late 2024.
The newest trailer (which you can check out below) also showcased more details of the gameplay and some slivers of the story elements the game will feature once the anticipated release date rolls around. So let's take a look at those next.
Black Myth: Wu Kong Story Details & Leaks
At the time of writing, there aren't many leaks available for the game, but we do have some ideas on what the story might be based on the fact that we know where the game draws its thematic elements: The legend of Sun Wukong in the 16th-century classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Sadly, we don't have any concrete story details, but it's likely the game will closely follow the legend's story.
The original plot of Journey to the West sees Buddhist monk Xuanzang traveling west to India with his four disciples, including the famous monkey king Sun Wukong (our game's protagonist), in search of holy scriptures.
The game might see us search for and find these scriptures while telling its story in an indirect way (similar to the Souls series) or it may include more detailed cutscenes with dialogue and a fleshed-out story, which we think is most likely given that the latest trailer showcases more dialogue scenes with enemies and possible NPCs.
Black Myth: Wu Kong Gameplay Features & Trailers
Based on all the information we have so far from the first trailer that was showcased, as well as what we've seen in the most recent release date reveal trailer, we've confirmed quite a bit of what the game will be like mechanically. First and foremost, Souls-like enthusiasts will note that the game sports a Souls-inspired combat system, but with a more vibrant and fast-paced feel—think Sekiro, but with an even more colorful and fluid combat system.
The game seems to focus heavily on grand spectacle boss fights, utilizing similar mechanics to other Souls games such as parrying, and rolling to avoid damage, but of course, some special abilities that set this game apart from its Souls-like influences. Wukong has shapeshifting abilities, as showcased in the older official trailer, and each one seems to be suited to specific scenarios.
His larger form can deal with swarms of enemies, and he can clone himself to execute multiple attacks at once, and of course, his iconic magical staff, which can extend to deal intricate combos. The staff is called Ruyi Jingu Bang in the mythos of Sun Wukong in Journey to the West, so it might have the same name in Black Myth: Wu Kong, but we'll have to wait and see for more details on the gameplay elements and details.
