Surprise announcements from Nintendo should be anticipated, expected as it has been a trend for the Japanese publisher. Yet it still comes as a massive surprise when they teamed up with developer Monolith Soft to announce Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, heading to Nintendo Switch consoles in 2025, with a first look Announcement Trailer to boot.
Alongside the trailer, Nintendo released an official news post on the Nintendo website, a release date and pricing of which Switch owners can now add the game to the Wishlist. The game's official synopsis has also been unveiled to avid Xenoblade fans, who will set off to save and rebuild humanity once more in this "expansive sci-fi adventure."
According to the official news announcement, the original game was first released for Nintendo's Wii U console in 2015, which was initially praised for its combat design and systems and worldbuilding elements; however, it lacked explaining how these systems function in-game. Monolith Soft will be giving it yet another chance with this game port for Nintendo Switch consoles launching 20th March 2025, which will be adding new "story elements" and multiplayer content.
Based on the accompanying game description for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, "The year is 2054. Humans have fled Earth amidst a destructive intergalactic war. As one of the survivors and a member of the New Los Angeles (NLA) colony, it’s your mission to help build a new home on the sprawling, hostile planet Mira. Explore this seamless open world across five otherworldly continents teeming with unknown creatures – some of which are epic in scale – and fight for the future of humanity."
Pre-ordering for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has gone live via the Nintendo eShop following its announcement, and its official pricing is confirmed as $59,99 / £49.99 / €59,99 per its listing. Players who purchase the game's digital version will receive a "Nintendo Switch Online 14-Day Free Trial code" that can be used to experience the game's multiplayer content and online play features.
