You just started a new life on your whole new ranch in Slime Rancher 2. You’ve started exploring the island a bit - perhaps even found some interesting vegetables like Heart Beets - but what do you do now, and how can you make the most of your ranch?
In this article, we’ll go over the most important tips to help you start up a whole new working Slime Ranch, how to get the most out of your Slimes, and how to get some incredibly helpful upgrades for your ranch early on in the game.
1. Mix Omnivorous Slimes in Slime Rancher 2
Let's start with the first step for this whole new amazing island for Beatrix Lebeau to explore. You’ve just arrived on the island, and obviously, the first thing you'll need to get your ranch going is some Slimes.

Begin your journey by exploring the area and collecting some Slimes and Fruits you like. Ensure that you collect some Pink Slimes along the way, in addition to any others that catch your interest. If you're looking for any particular type of Slime to add to your ranch, you might want to check out our guide on all the Slimes available in Slime Rancher 2.
Once you’ve collected some Slimes, you’ll then want to start with a mix of any Slimes of your choice and Pink Slimes. Pink Slimes are recognized for their tendency to be omnivorous, making it easier to start a well-functioning ranch with any type of fruits, vegetables, or meats you desire.
2. Use Your Slimepedia
As you start collecting Slimes, you’ll want to ensure that you use your Slimepedia frequently. By doing so, you can find out the favorite food of the new Slimes you acquired for your ranch.
Feeding your Slimes their favorite food not only makes them less agitated for a longer time but doubles their production of plort - so it’s definitely worthwhile to check out your Slimepedia and find the right foods for your Slimes.
3. Upgrade Your Ranch
Upgrading your ranch can be a bit confusing when you begin in the game, but it’s very important.
That's why we recommend to any beginner to start with these particular upgrades:
-
Garden Sprinkler and Nutrient Soil upgrades: Buying these will ensure that, from the start of the game, you never run out of food for your cute little blobs.
-
Corrals High Walls and Auto-Feeder upgrades: Buying these two upgrades prevent your Slimes from escaping, as well as taking care of their feedings while you’re away exploring.
-
Gully extension: The Gully is the perfect extension to start farming chicken meat as soon as possible. Just place some roosters on this terrain and they will start reproducing while you are away.
You should try to purchase these upgrades as early as possible in order to ensure that your ranch is automated and that you have food for your Slimes.
4. Use Your Refinery Immediately
Unlike the first version of the Slime Rancher, it might be best to use the refinery as soon as you can in Slime Rancher 2, as it is given to you at the start. The Refinery allows you to break down plorts and other resources.
A free first refinery link is found at the beginning of the map, giving you a little hint that it might be good to add some wild plorts from time to time while exploring this section.
5. Look At Your Fabricator Often
The Fabricator is probably the most useful tool given to you in Slime Rancher 2, allowing you to upgrade and fabricate a whole bunch of useful items.
The gadgets that the Fabricator allows you to create will make your adventures a lot easier, so we suggest looking at your Fabricator often for new upgrades to get the most out of it.
To create gadgets, you’ll need materials like Strange Diamonds, so you may find our guide on how to find Strange Diamonds helpful.
And that’s all you need to know to get started in Slime Rancher 2. Employing these beginners’ tips will ensure that you make the most of your adventures in Slime Rancher 2!
