With a new season around the corner in Pokémon GO, Alola to Alola will mark the final event based on the Generation VII region. This event concludes the island research that every player has been given for the duration of the season, and everyone will get the chance to choose their own path going forward.
Before you can choose your own path for the Special Research in Alola to Alola, you must complete the four base island research stories. Everyone who logs in by the 1st of June will have a chance to complete these, but all four must be done before having access to the upcoming rewards.

Special Research is always a set of tasks that can be done over time in Pokémon GO. That means once you get the initial research, which will be time-gated, there is no need to rush. But keep in mind you can miss the Special Research overall if you don't finish the other sections.
