Ubisoft's action-adventure gaming series Watch Dogs, which was speculated to be getting a live-action adaptation, has officially entered production. The French publisher and developer announced this month in a social media post, years after the project was first confirmed in 2016.
The studio released a press statement last month confirming that the film adaptation will "begin production later this summer," which the latest news corroborates. The film adaptation, which is being reported to be set in the same fictionalized world as the games' events, is confirmed to "feature an original story," with some casting news already confirmed by Ubisoft.
Ubisoft posted an image of a clapboard on their social media accounts, signaling the start of production of the Watch Dogs film, captioning it, "Lights_Camera_Action.exe" on 3rd July 2024, tagging its director Mathieu Turi. It's already confirmed that The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes actor Tom Blyth and Talk to Me's breakout actress Sophie Wilde have joined the cast of Watch Dogs; however, the remaining cast has been kept under wraps.
According to a report from IGN, the French publisher and developer first announced a live adaptation of Watch Dogs during Sony's GamesCon presentation in 2016 after rumors that it could be developed by Ubisoft, Sony, and production studio New Regency. Despite all the rumors and teases of the film adaptation, the project went through a period of development hell for a few years until Ubisoft released the aforementioned press statement in June 2024.
Alongside the film adaptation of Watch Dogs, Ubisoft is reportedly developing an animated project based on the video game series. The Hollywood Reporter reported this back in 2019, although the French publisher and developer have yet to announce any new developments or updates following the report.
