Halo Infinite might not have set the world alight following its launch in 2021, but the content does keep coming with a Season 5 update, titled 'Reckoning', due to launch this week (on October 17).
Ahead of the new content drop, it has been reported that 343 Industries is already actively developing the next Halo campaign as part of a massive pivot away from Halo Infinite. The rumors of this change in development come from the SG Bitcast (seen further down), a gaming podcast hosted by the website Seasoned Gaming.
"Do I have any info on the Halo campaign? The short answer is nothing specific. What I can say, what I know anyway, is that yes, they do have a team working on the next Halo campaign. It is part of the restructure that is building the next generation of Halo on Unreal," Ains said in the SG Bitcast 269 podcast.
"I don't know. If I'm a betting man, I think I told a friend the other day that the earliest I would expect to see another Halo singleplayer campaign outside of Firefight and stuff they're doing in Infinite, is a couple of years. It's going to be a while so don't hold your breath."
Right now it's unclear exactly how Microsoft of Xbox might choose to move forward with Halo. Clearly Infinite didn't manage to maintain its audience and the development of Halo under 343 Industries has felt rocky at best for a number of years.
The smart move could be to start over from scratch with a new project, rather than trying to resurrect a game that many have moved on from less than two years after launch.
Thankfully, Microsoft now has a pretty healthy selection of FPS veterans and studios who can help forge this new path forward, with the expertise of Activision's Call of Duty studios now part of the wider Xbox family.
