Epic Games has updated the Vault mechanic for Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, forgoing the previous method of unlocking them: the Buddy system. But for players to unlock the vaults, they need to acquire the vault keys to open them.
Once they have a vault key, the next part is where the vaults are located on the Island map. This guide details how to unlock vaults and where to find vault keys in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4.
How To Open Security Vaults In Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4
In previous Fortnite seasons, opening a vault required a group of players to stand close by to get scanned for the vault to be successfully unlocked and looted. This has since been changed in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, where vault keys are needed to open the vault.
Once a key or keys for high-security vaults are found, several lock and keyhole icons will appear on the mini-map indicating their locations. One lock and keyhole icon signifies that one key is required to open a vault, while two lock and keyhole icons mean a high-security vault that needs two keys to open.

High-security vaults tend to have better loot stashed away, unlike low-security vaults. With a key or keys on hand, walk up to a vault and interact with it to unlock and claim all the loot.
The game’s UI will also alert them to the number of vault keys holding at a given time which can be found on the bottom right side of the screen. It’s also worth mentioning that should they head to any of these vault locations which isn’t visible on the mini-map, it means that it has been unlocked by another player in which they’ll need to wait until the next match to open it themselves.
All Key Locations In Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4
As of writing, there are reportedly two ways players can acquire vault keys in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4. The first way is to loot Chests or, amongst randomized loot on building floors across the Fortnite Island.
Depending on the number of vaults, both low and high-security, reflect the number of vault keys one can find in-game. The second way is based on reports that some keys can be found inside of vaults themselves, which should classify as floor loot but either way, they’re bound to find a vault key at some point during a match.
When finding keys, they can be seen as a singular key or a stack of two keys, making it easier to travel from vault to vault. Regardless, locating a vault key doesn’t present as much of a challenge as trying to find the vault itself.
