Speedrunning is one of the most entertaining and competitive events within the gaming and esports space. This allows players from all walks of life and gaming aptitudes to blaze through some of gaming's most popular and iconic titles across the decades, setting or shattering world records and breaking stereotypes.
For one participant in the upcoming Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) 2024 event, a dog looks to make a record of being the first canine to record a speedrun at the event. This news was announced by its pet parent, first spotted by IGN, and has an official listing on the website, but there is a catch.
The Gyromote "Dog Assistance" speedrun will be Peanut Butter's first speedrunning event for AGDQ 2024 and may go down in gaming history. For their pet parent, streamer JSR_, this was confirmed on the official AGDQ's games list page, running on the NES, in which Peanut Butter will assist the streamer.
Unfortunately, Peanut Butter's name is nowhere near the game listing, as JSR_ will instead receive the credit for the speedrun. Nevertheless, Peanut Butter's tutoring has been documented, and according to JSR_, their first Gyromite speedrun was filmed by the streamer.
Highlighted in the YouTube video description, JSR_ stated that while they pressed on control pads, most of the inputting was done by the pooch. "No assistance, autofire, macros, or save states were used."
This took years of training," JSR_ explained in the YouTube listing. "I wanted to train him to do something special when I realized as a puppy that he was much smarter than most other dogs I've seen. Since I'm a speedrunner (and PB was literally named after, you know, getting a 'PB' in a speedrun), it only made sense to me.
While it's unfortunate that AGDQ won't be recognizing Peanut Butter as an official speedrunner, it's a monumental feat that they'll be showcased on the line-up in the upcoming event. The official line-up for AGDQ 2024 is available on the official site, which takes place between the 14th and 21st January 2023, with all proceeds donated to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
