Despite incredibly avoiding external leaks for weeks, Bungie itself ended spoiling the name of Destiny 2 Season 17, which will be titled Season of the Haunted.
On 23rd May, Bungie's Japanese YouTube account posted the video early, which we can only assume was a miscommunication error due to timezones, as the devs had mentioned the trailer would drop in the early hours of 24th May in North America.
Minutes after users found out about the slip-up, Bungie's official main Twitter account unveiled Season of the Hunted properly, which marks the return of Emperor Calus, a somewhat enigmatic figure D2 players first encountered during Destiny 2's first raid, Leviathan, in 2017.
Calus returns to Destiny 2 in Season of the Haunted
It's been years since players have had the chance to interact with Emperor Calus in a somewhat direct way. The last remnant of his influence could be seen with the Presage mission in 2021, which tasked players with figuring out the mysteries aboard the abandoned Glykon Volatus ship.
"Power, depravity, vengeance. The object of Calus’s desire has taken many shapes over the years. His once-opulent ship, now derelict and corrupted, has returned to our galaxy—its sights set on the Pyramid ship lying dormant on the Moon," Bungie explained regarding the return of Calus and his imposing ship, the Leviathan, which is now shrouded in Darkness.

The trailer revealed a ton of stuff players will be able to chase in the upcoming season, including the new Exotic Shiro-4's Sidearm, the new seasonal artifact, gear, and more. It also gave us confirmation that Solar will be the next subclass to get the 3.0 treatment following Void 3.0 during Season of the Risen.
Most of the seasonal activities will take place on the Moon as the Leviathan will chase the Darkness ship stationed there. The H.E.L.M will be moved, and the six-man seasonal activity, Nightmare Containment, will take place aboard Calus' ship.
Finally, it seems Crow will play an important part in this season's weekly mission, called Sever, as he looks to reinvidcate himself following the events that occurred during Season of the Risen.
