One of gaming's most notable directors, Hideo Kojima, is set to take his love of films to the next level with the development of a live-action adaptation of Death Stranding. The game, released in 2019, was the first under the Kojima Productions banner to not be made in association with Konami.
Starring Norman Reedus as courier Sam Porter-Bridges, Death Stranding sends players on a cross-country journey in a world ravaged by a cataclysmic event known as the "Death Stranding." Players would also work together in order to collaboratively build structures, place resources and tools to gelp each other on their own individual journeys.
On December 14, 2023, Kojima announced via X that a live-action adaptation in now in the works in partnership with A24. "A24 and DEATH STRANDING will be made into a live-action movie," Kojima said. “A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative..."
The director went said of the in-development project: "The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”
This will be the second film project undertaken by Kojima Productions. The first being a documentary on the game director himself, titled "Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds" which is being made in co-production with PlayStation Studios and is set to release in 2024 on Disney+.
