Dark Souls Archthrones, being a comprehensive mod for Dark Souls 3, introduces a multitude of new and formidable bosses to confront as you traverse through a landscape that feels both fresh and familiar. Among these bosses is the Angelic Siege Golem, whose defeat may initially pose a significant challenge.
If you're struggling to overcome this boss, fear not, as we've got you covered in this guide. Below, we'll offer you some tips and insights on how to beat the Angelic Siege Golem in Dark Souls Archthrones.
Dark Souls Archthrones Angelic Siege Golem Boss Fight Overview
The Angelic Siege Golem is the second of the two early bosses you will face during the first area called War-Torn Village inside the Archthrone of the Bountiful Queen. To locate him you'll simply need to make your way through the War-Torn Village until you reach the Castle Approach Bonfire, and the entrance to the boss will be just outside it.
The Angelic Siege Golem is a large humanoid enemy wearing golden armor and wielding a large one-handed axe. The boss seems strangely familiar to the Iudex Gundyr boss from Dark Souls 3, and it makes sense for the reference since he is the first boss of that game, and this boss could easily be the first one you encounter in the Archthrone, or the entire game for that matter if you do this Archthrone first.
The boss wields powerful melee attacks, as well as the use of light, angelic magic that comes into play during its second phase. So before we jump into battle tips, let's first discuss its moves.
Angelic Siege Golem First Phase
- Axe Sweep: The golem builds up a strike that swings from left to right in front of him.
- Ground Stomp: The golem raises its leg and stomps onto the ground repeatedly, up to three times, and deals heavy damage.
- Sideswipe: The golem raises its axe and deals a vertical swing as it steps quickly towards you, hitting you as it passes if you don't dodge.
- Jump back: The boss will jump backwards quickly if it's overwhelmed or at random intervals, and deals damage if it touches you while it's jumping.
Angelic Siege Golem Second Phase
- Light Soul Mass: The golem generates orbs of light (Similar to Soulmass) that stay with him until you get into range or time passes, which causes them to home in and launch themselves toward you.
- Light Cleave: Using the axe, the golem swings forward, launching a blade of light to fire toward you dealing heavy damage.
- Light Slam: The golem raises and then slams his hand and axe onto the ground causing an AoE burst of light damage.
- Axe Slam: The golem slams his axe into the ground in front of him. Not as dangerous but can catch you off guard due to its speed.
- Spears of Light: The golem will lower his weapon and teleport to one end of the arena (see next ability), while spears of light appear around you, dealing damage when they build up fully.
- Light-Wave: Once teleported to the end of the arena, the golem will strike the ground causing a wave of light energy to rip through the ground at high speed towards you, dealing tons of damage if it hits.
The Angelic Siege Golem is one of the bosses in the game that has a special mechanic or "gimmick" to its combat that you'll need to understand before you can take it on. This mechanic involves hitting the golem's legs until they light up, and once both are lit the golem falls and you can wail away.
During the fight, you'll need to use your lock on to target specific legs (or use a weapon with a wide reach like the Claymore I'm using in the image below) and light them up. Then once the Angelic Siege Golem falls, you can instead attack the head which deals more damage than hitting it anywhere else.
This ultimately means that you simply need to get used to the boss's attacks and how to dodge them while lighting up the legs and dealing damage. Of course, some abilities are still tricky to get right, especially when the boss reaches half health and enters phase 2, so it's worth taking notes and not rushing to light up the legs.
For example, if you see the Light Soul Mass, back away, to give yourself space to dodge the light cleave coming up consecutively. When the entire golem's body moves up, expect a light slam and back away quickly to avoid getting hit.
These are just a few examples, but you'll get used to all of its moves fairly quickly as they tend to be easy to read. Once you understand them, all that's left is to outlast the Angelic Siege Golem and use its gimmick to your advantage until it falls, allowing you access to the next area in Archthrones.
