G2 Reverse-Sweeps HEROIC in Shanghai Major Quarterfinals

On the second day of the Perfect World Shanghai Major at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in China, the final two Quarterfinals matches occurred. G2 Esports, one of the favorites to win the event, faced off against underdogs HEROIC in a best-of-three clash.

Let's take a look at what went down in the G2 Esports vs. HEROIC match in the Quarterfinals of the Shanghai Major.

HEROIC vs. G2 Esports Match Report & Results

On HEROIC's map pick of Ancient, G2 Esports got off to a solid start, dominating the early rounds for a 3-1 lead on the CT side before HEROIC bounced back with a round win. G2 quickly responded with a risky force buy to take a 4-2 lead.

Despite Nikola "NiKo" Kovač going on an absolute rampage, HEROIC bounced back with a huge string of rounds to win the first half 7-5. Then, on the CT side of Ancient, with momentum on their side, HEROIC continued their streak by winning the Pistol Round and converting with ease.

HEROIC didn't give G2 Esports an inch, and despite some close rounds, they won five in a row to put themselves on match point with a score of 12-5 before G2 Esports pulled one back in the 18th round. HEROIC stabilized quickly and put G2 out of their misery on Ancient, winning 13-6.

On G2's map pick of Nuke, HEROIC started off on the CT side claimed the first pistol round, and then converted against G2's eco for an early 2-0 lead on the historically CT-sided map.

G2 Esports continued to push back and hurt HEROIC each round, damaging their CT economy a bit. Early on in the first half, it was 4-2 in favor of HEROIC, with G2 earning a few important T rounds.

With the young superstar Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov popping off in a few rounds, G2 Esports managed to secure five in the first half, a solid result on the T side of Nuke. As teams switched sides, HEROIC got the Pistol Round to give themselves a solid 8-5 lead.

G2 Esports stepped up in a big way in the 14th round to secure a win with a force buy in a rather surprising move. Then, they cleaned up HEROIC in the next two rounds to tie Nuke at an 8-8 scoreline.

With momentum now on their side, G2 Esports seemed unstoppable, pulling off a massive 6-round win streak to pull ahead before HEROIC clawed one back to make the score 11-9 in G2 Esports' favor. G2 quickly bounced back from a loss in the 20th to secure the next two rounds on Nuke, winning 13-9 and setting up for the third and deciding map of the series, Mirage.

On the T side, HEROIC won the first Pistol Round on Mirage, then converted against G2's full eco. In the first gun round, however, G2 Esports managed to navigate a post-plant situation and get on the board but then dropped the ball in the 4th round to give HEROIC a 3-1 lead, with René "TeSeS" Madsen scoring three kills.

Despite some early mistakes, G2 Esports bounced back with Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov getting some high-impact frags each round, wielding his trusty AWP with perfection to tie the score 4-4. After a back-and-forth first half, the scores were tied at six each.

As teams switched sides, HEROIC won the Pistol Round on the CT side, and converted for an 8-6 lead. HEROIC extended their lead to 9-6 before G2 Esports managed to retaliate in the 16th round, and then put a huge dent in the CT economy by winning the 17th, forcing HERIOC onto pistols, then cleaning up to tie the score at 9-9.

Showing their big-match temperament, HEROIC bounced back to win the 19th round. Then, with a massive 2v1 clutch from AWPer Abdulkhalik "degster" Gasanov, HEROIC secured an 11-9 lead.

G2 Esports gambled with a force buy in the 21st round, and it paid off, with IGL Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski stepping up to win a 2v1 clutch. G2 then broke HEROIC's economy in the 22nd round, then converted against the eco to put themselves on match and series point with a 12-11 score. In a close 24th round, HEROIC managed to pull one back and force overtime.

HEROIC took down the first round of overtime, but a massive 4K from Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa tied the teams at 13 each. G2 extended their overtime lead to 15-13, with malbsMd picking up a huge 3K in the 18th round. In the 19th round, G2 Esports completed the comeback, winning 16-13 on Mirage and the series 2-1 with a beautiful and dramatic reverse sweep!

Congratulations go out to G2 Esports for winning the match, eliminating HEROIC from the Perfect World Shanghai Major. G2 Esports will face off against the winner of FaZe Clan and Team Vitality in the Semifinals on Saturday, 14 December 2024.
