This is the first time Valve's rules are in action, and as such, fans need to know some things. First, BLAST has invited 31 teams based on their VRS standings. The last spot goes to the team that wins the Wildcard spot. Thus far, only Team Falcons has received a Wildcard invite.

To be eligible for a Wildcard spot, the roster that comply with the following:

  • It includes at least 3 players who individually were members of a top 8 Roster on the VRS at any time during the preceding 12 months or,
  • It has won any Tier 1 event in the 12 months preceding the announcement of the Wildcard Invite.

BLAST has one more Wildcard invite planned, and explained that they invited more teams on the VRS instead of Wildcard slots:

Currently, only Team Falcons will meet this criteria. As a result and in accordance with Valve rules, we have invited the next available teams in the VRS in place of two of our planned Wildcard invites. We have one additional Wildcard selection to invite which we’ll confirm before the end of the year.

Lastly, you might wonder where FURIA Fe is since they also rank in the top 28. The rules indicate that an organization may only field one roster per tournament. BLAST sent out invitations to both the FURIA and FURIA Fe rosters, explaining that they could only accept one invitation, but the FURIA Fe invitation was declined.
