It's been over 3 years since Nintendo first announced the sequel to The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, also informally known as Breath of the Wild 2.
Now, after a long hiatus, at its latest Nintendo Direct showcase, the company has finally confirmed what the sequel of Breath of the Wild is officially called, alongside a teaser trailer and a much-awaited release date.
Here's everything you need to know about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom, including its release date, platforms, and more.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom release date
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will release on 12th May 2023. The two trailers for the game so far hint at a more vertical open-world playground this time around.
Breath of the Wild's open-world sandbox rewarded exploration and provided immense freedom to explore the Kingdom of Hyrule in any way possible.
If the latest trailer is any indication, Tears of the Kingdom seems to be an evolution of the Breath of the Wild, with more emphasis on open-world traversal.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom platforms
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will release exclusively on Nintendo Switch. There have been rumors swirling about a potential successor to the Switch, aka, Switch 2, though Nintendo has yet to confirm its existence.

If Switch 2 is real, fans could probably expect The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to be a launch title for it, similar to how Breath of the Wild was for Switch.
Here's the game's official description from Nintendo's website.
"In addition to the vast lands of Hyrule, the latest entry in the storied Legend of Zelda series will take you up into the skies! Look forward to Link’s massive adventure starting again when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, drops for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023."
