One of the most talked about mechanics coming to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the new Terastallizing feature. This allows Pokémon to change their original base typing into something completely new. We've already seen the benefits of using Terastal Pokémon in various trailers, where the Rock-type Pokémon Sudowoodo, for example, shed its weakness to water by changing into a Grass-type.
Terastal Pokémon is definitely going to shake up the metagame, and one of the best ways to acquire Terastal Pokémon is via Tera Raid battles. This article will cover what Tera Raid battles are, what players can expect the gameplay to be like in Tera Raid battles, and the current list of Tera Raid battle events!
22nd November 2023 Update: This guide reflects that the Mighty Hisuian Samurott Tera Raid event will begin on 24th November 2023 in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The original article continues below.

What Are Tera Raid Battles In Pokémon Scarlet And Violet?
Much like Gigantamax or Dynamax Raid battles in Pokémon Sword and Shield, Tera Raid battles are a co-op feature where you and three other players take on a powerful enemy boss. These enemy boss Pokémon will be much stronger than your average wild encounter and will require teamwork to take down efficiently. Any Pokémon appearing as a boss in a Tera Raid battle will have their Tera type, so you will want to bring Pokémon that are strong against the boss' updated type.
Most of the mechanics used in Max Raid battles are ported over here, with a few exceptions, as players no longer have to wait for every ally to select a move. Battles will now play out in real-time, alleviating some of the boredom of waiting for everyone to choose their attack, and the new "cheer" function will take up an attack slot but will boost the entire party's Attack, Special Attack, Defence, and Special Defence stats.
How To Join Tera Raid Battles In Pokémon Scarlet And Violet?
Joining Tera Raid battles in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is just as easy as it was to join Max Raid battles in Sword and Shield. Around Paldea, shining crystals can be checked for active Raids and joined if available.
Just like in Sword and Shield, a beam of light will shine up to the sky, making active Raids easier to spot. The crystal's color will correspond to the Tera type of the Pokémon you are about to face. For example, a blue crystal means that the Raid boss will have a Tera Water-type.
How To Play Tera Raid Battles Co-Op In Pokémon Scarlet And Violet
After joining a Tera Raid battle via an overworld crystal, players will be taken to a loading lobby where other trainers can join. You have the option to enter these battles with up to three other people but can also do so alone with members of your current team or in your box. Over time, random trainers will join your Tera Raid, but you will need to use a link code to add specific people.
Just like in Sword and Shield, Raid hosts can password-protect their Raids with codes. Then, by giving the code to a friend, they can join your Raid. It isn't known yet whether it is possible to invite friends directly to a Tera Raid battle, but considering it was not a feature in Sword and Shield, we don't expect it here.
How To Catch Pokémon In Tera Raid Battles Pokémon Scarlet And Violet
Similar to how Max Raid battles worked in Sword and Shield, by defeating a Tera Raid boss in battle, players will be given the opportunity to catch it. You have only one chance to catch a Tera Raid boss before it disappears, so when prompted to select a ball to use, Repeat Balls, Dusk Balls, and Ultra Balls should be your go-to (provided you don't have any spare Master Balls).
Additionally, whether you catch a Tera Raid Pokémon or not, players will be awarded several items just for participating in a successful Raid. And that completes our guide to Tera Raid Battles in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet!
