Unfortunate news for fans of the anticipated action RPG Path of Exile 2 (PoE) as its developer announced it will be pushing back the game's Early Access release for a few weeks. Its game director made and explained the announcement in a developer update video uploaded to their official YouTube channel.
There is, however, a "light at the end of the tunnel" for the PoE community that the game's delay isn't a long wait, like sometime in 2025, as its new release date is around the corner in December 2024. As such, we'll have to hold out for three additional weeks until its eventual release for consoles and PCs, with a planned special livestream where new content will be showcased and coming soon to Path of Exile 2.
Game director Jonathan Rogers addressed in a developer update video, revealing that PoE 2 has been pushed back by three weeks from its intended release date (15th November 2024) to its new launch date of 6th December 2024. Rogers continued that this decision to push back its launch was due to "work on server-side infrastructure," that has made it challenging for Grinding Gear Games, the developer, to finish it in time for its release.
As to what this work is referring to? Rogers elaborated that it's in reference to the "microtransactions" shared between PoE 1 and its sequel; a key feature the developer is promising to "work across both Path of Exile 1 and 2. In order to do that, we have to integrate the account systems for not only Path of Exile 1 and 2, but also for the console realms as well."
He further elaborated that this extra time will ensure that players jumping into the game won't lose "anything they paid for, and nobody has their account broken," which is a fair and reasonable explanation for delaying the game. But, there's something players can anticipate on the horizon post-launch as a livestream will reveal forthcoming content coming to PoE 2, and as such, they're "looking forward to telling [them] all about the endgame content that the team has been working hard on."
