While Overwatch 2 has a passionate and dedicated community, it's also notorious for the prevalence of toxic behavior. Players have long accepted this as just a few bad apples in the bunch. However, it seems the situation has worsened over time, with some players now speaking out to claim that the community has become so toxic, that it might be the worst in the entire online multiplayer space.
Overwatch 2 Players Claim Its Community Is Among the Most Toxic in Online Multiplayer Gaming
As many players know, Overwatch 2 has developed a reputation for its toxic community, particularly when things go south during a match. Whether it’s a bad game or someone deciding to hop onto voice chat or in-game chat to flame teammates for their performance, the toxicity is undeniable. And now, some players are even saying it’s reached a point where Overwatch 2 has reached or surpassed League of Legends as the king of online toxicity.
Reddit user u/ChisSol noted that Overwatch 2 has now hit "League of Legends" levels of toxicity, pointing out how League players are known for “hating each other, hating the game we’re playing, and hating the devs.” While the exact reason behind this growing toxicity is unclear, Overwatch 2’s community may have thinned out due to the success of competitors like Marvel Rivals, leaving behind more toxic players and a more sensitive player base reacting to the state of the game.
Players have also shared their thoughts on what’s contributing to this toxic atmosphere, with some suggesting that taking the game too seriously in competitive modes plays a big role. As one player said, “Every time without fail, I come back to play the game, [and] there’s a bonehead ELO goblin who takes the game too seriously.” They went on to compare Overwatch and Call of Duty as being neck-and-neck when it comes to toxicity.
Despite the outpouring of frustration, some players are pushing back, offering a more positive perspective. One player stated, “I still love the game. Maybe I never hated it because I never cared about climbing up or improving. I just play support in gold ranks for 2-5 games every single day and I’m just chillin’.”
So, while it’s clear that toxicity in the Overwatch 2 community isn’t improving anytime soon, some players are still enjoying the game for what it offers. The developers, too, seem to be aware of the problem and are planning major changes moving forward. We’ll just have to wait and see how things evolve, hoping that Overwatch 2 doesn’t get too toxic for players to enjoy what it has to offer.
